Curriculum Showcase
At PS 11 we believe so much of learning is experienced through sights, sounds, taste and touch. Our hallmark tradition that is the PS 11 Curriculum showcase is experiential learning at its very best!
Our Scholars Pre-K through 5th grade have the opportunity each year to explore a topic of interest in depth incorporating reading, writing, social studies and artistic expression. Subjects include environments, countries, cultures, areas of activism to name a few! Over the years we have stumbled into an enchanted rainforest, taken a dive into oceanic life, explored the Sahara, bundled up for an arctic adventure and went back in time to Early Dutch Life in New York. Countries visited include Nigeria, Brazil, India, Japan, Egypt, and countless others! We have engaged our 5th graders in democratic debate, tackling pollution, exploring the roots then and now of immigration all part of the diverse tapestry that is NYC displayed magnificently inside our many classrooms each school year!
The topic of choice for each classroom is studied intensely and seamlessly woven into the curriculum leveraging literature, articles, videos, foods, culture, ways of life, language and much more! Scholars apply their chosen topic to various assignments and activities that allows them to truly become experts in their chosen area of study all culminating into a presentation on all that was learned showcased for our entire school community as our scholars beam with excitement and pride!
It is in this presentation in which the creativity blooms as students not only are charged with displaying their expertise visually while leveraging and learning presentation skills they also support physically transforming entire classrooms into their topic of study transporting guests to various destinations around the world and deep into their chosen topic of study! Even culinary displays with tasty treats can be found throughout many of our classrooms paired with their country of origin. Truly one of the most beloved events each school year!
